If Online Presence Is The New Fashion, Then Think Of Your Content As The Perfect Outfit To Showcase

DISCLAIMER

I am NOT A: Branding Expert Content Writer (or even remotely close)

Writing on Social Media (particularly LinkedIn is new to me)

Here are some random thoughts:

You spend hours crafting the perfect pun, the ideal meme, the impeccable joke. And for what? Likes? Shares? Buzz?

All those things are great, but what about leads?

I see this question being asked by creators every day!

Well, I’ll tell you what about leads.

Last week, I got 2 leads from my funny non-value content.

Without trying!

This was not the first time!

One of them wasn’t for me, but the other one? Maybe something!

That’s the beauty of content. You never know who is paying attention, who’s lurking in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to pounce.

But here’s the thing. I DON’T use LinkedIn to generate leads. Nope, not me.

I gave it a whirl for precisely six weeks, but I wasn’t fully invested and to be honest I witnessed an astonishing array of creators facing retribution on this platform, some deservedly so, while others left me scratching my head in utter bewilderment.

Considering my lack of a built-in filter sometimes, I couldn’t help but wonder: was that going to be my fate down the road?

I built my referral business the old-fashioned way, by doing the work and making people happy offline. And I will continue to build outside of social media.

You see I wasn’t even “allowed” on social media until a year ago. My NDAs wouldn’t allow it and truthfully I never entertained the thought of “branding” and what that meant for someone like me, until I got dared to become active on LinkedIn in June 2022.

To be quite honest — I still don’t know what it means 🤣

Here is what I’ve come to realize — when you think people aren’t paying attention, they are. They’re watching, they’re listening, they are taking mental notes. And your personality? It’s a magnet to the RIGHT people. It’s what sets you apart, what makes you memorable, what makes people want to work with you.

So bring your personality to your content. Infuse it everywhere. Don’t be afraid to let your freak flag fly. Because the truth is, people want to work with people they like. People they can relate to. People who make them laugh.

And if you’re not funny? That’s okay.

You don’t have to be a stand-up comedian to inject some humor into your content.

My advice for folks now entering the LinkedIn or the social media arena, be different.

Be so captivating that your audience is already clicking ‘buy’ before you even have to utter a call-to-action.
